Julie Murphy, owner of Designer Draperies of Boston, is an outstanding businesswoman (and valued Ten Key client). She has a keen eye for quality and the drive to do more for her clients and her company. Now, her custom soft and alternative window fashions are winning awards.
When we first spoke with Julie in April 2015, she told us about her experience in moving from her in-home workroom to acquiring a larger, local shop with established employees. She counseled business owners to pay attention to the details and prepare for the long haul.
In August 2016, Julie offered guidance for business owners considering acquisition as a route to business growth. Julie made a huge leap of faith, but in the end it was worth it! She continues to succeed with creativity, hard work, and key strategies.
Here is a recap of some of Julie’s advice:
Words of Wisdom on Acquisitions
Julie advises new business owners to be careful making changes at first. When starting a new business venture, not every element needs to be adjusted. Julie suggests speaking to the current or former employees to find out what’s working and what’s not. “Learn about the existing business and seek out the most effective solution,” Julie offers. “It may be something that’s already in place.” What a learning experience!
Julie also recommends surrounding yourself with capable colleagues and resources. Julie knows that bringing together a strong support team is crucial for her business needs. (Ten Key, Inc. is pleased to be on that list.) Certainly, in Julie’s opinion, “When you’re taking a step like this in your business, it’s imperative to have a team who knows the answers to the questions that you don’t.”
Recent Recognition in Boston magazine
How has this been working for her? Phenomenally! Since our last conversation, Julie’s business continues to thrive. As a result of her dedication, Designer Draperies of Boston was recently awarded Boston magazine’s Best of Boston® Home 2018 Best Custom Drapery. Her gorgeous draperies were on the cover of their Winter 2016 edition as a preview of a feature article on the work of Koo de Kir Architectural Interiors. Congratulations, Julie!
Conclusion
In light of her continued success, we asked Julie to share her thoughts regarding this well-deserved recognition. “I like to think that the due diligence I put into the acquisition of Designer Draperies of Boston in 2014 had a lot to do with receiving this award. I worked hard to earn the trust of the interior designers whose beautiful work has been published, allowing my work to be seen.” As for her plans moving forward, Julie says, “Business has been on a steady incline, and I know through continued hard work and excellent customer service, we will continue to grow without sacrificing quality.”
