Wondering about deadline changes for this tax season? As you probably already know, Tax Day is usually April 15th. (Hopefully you’ve already hired Ten Key, Inc. to do your taxes, so you’re not dreading it.) This year, however, taxpayers have been given a slight reprieve. April 15th falls on Emancipation Day, which is a holiday in Washington D.C., so processing centers will be closed and the 2016 deadline to file your federal income tax returns is now Monday, April 18th, 2016. Massachusetts and Maine residents get an extra day above that: because Patriots’ Day, a state holiday, falls on the 18th, your 2016 tax filing deadline is Tuesday, April 19, 2016.
Whether you’re filing as an individual or for a corporation or partnership, being on top of your tax deadlines can save you from an IRS-induced headache later on. Here are some essential upcoming dates- take note!
Important Deadline Changes
February 1: Corporations to distribute Form W2 and/or Form 1099 to employees
February 29th: Corporations to file Form W2 and/or Form 1099 (if paper filing)
March 15th: Corporations and S-corporations to file returns or extensions
March 31st: Corporations to file Form W2 and/or Form 1099 (if e-filing)
April 18th: Individuals (except in MA and ME) and partnerships to file returns or extensions
April 19th: Individuals in MA and ME to file returns or extensions
September 15th: Extended deadline for corporations, S-corporations, and partnerships to file returns (if extension was granted)
October 17th: Extended deadline for individuals to file returns (if extension was granted)
Of course, these are just some of the basics: deadline changes may also depend on the specifics of your situation. If, for example, you are living abroad, your filing date is June 15th.
